The Cincinnati Reds have parted ways with manager David Bell after a tenure that spanned six years. Bell, who was under contract through the 2026 season, departs with a managerial record of 409-456 (.473). Although he led the team to the postseason in the shortened 2020 season and concluded the 2023 season with a winning record, the Reds' recent struggles culminated in his dismissal.
David Bell's Journey with the Reds
David Bell, the 62nd manager in Reds franchise history, leaves with mixed outcomes. His 409 wins place him eighth among Reds managers, while his 456 losses rank fourth. Bell's steadiness was noted during his tenure, with Nick Krall stating, "David provided the kind of steadiness that we needed in our clubhouse over the last few seasons."
However, the Reds' performance in the past few years has been inconsistent. While the team had a commendable season in 2023 under Bell's guidance, finishing with a winning record, the subsequent 2024 season saw the Reds fall to fourth place in the National League Central with a 76-81 record. This drop in performance came after a dismal 62-100 record in 2022, adding to the mounting pressure on Bell.
A Change in Direction
Addressing the decision, Nick Krall commented, "We felt a change was needed to move the major-league team forward. We have not achieved the success we expected, and we need to begin focusing on 2025." The Reds' management evidently believes that a new direction is required to meet their expectations for success in the coming seasons.
A New Interim Manager
Stepping into the role of interim manager for the final five games of the season will be Freddie Benavides. Benavides, who was drafted by the Reds as an infielder in 1987, has a long-standing relationship with the team. He has been a fixture in the Reds' coaching staff, serving as David Bell's bench coach since 2019. His familiarity with the team and the players might bring some stability during this transitional phase.
League-Wide Managerial Changes
David Bell is not the only managerial casualty this season. Earlier in August, Pedro Grifol of the White Sox and Scott Servais of the Mariners were also relieved of their duties. The 2024 season has thus far seen significant managerial turnovers as teams recalibrate to meet their performance goals.
While the Reds prepare for the final stretch of the season under new interim leadership, speculation will begin to build over who will permanently take the reins. Bell’s mixed legacy as manager will be scrutinized as the Reds look to the future, aiming to bounce back and strive for a more consistent path to success.
