Comcast subscribers can breathe a sigh of relief as the months-long blackout of Bally Sports channels has come to an end, thanks to a newly inked carriage deal with Diamond Sports Group. The resolution arrives just in time for fans eager to tune back into their favorite local teams, starting at the beginning of August.
Diamond Sports Group, which owns 15 regional sports networks under the Bally Sports banner, removed their channels from Comcast’s roster in early May. This disruption left avid sports fans in a lurch, especially those dedicated to local MLB, NBA, and NHL teams. The prolonged absence stemmed from Diamond Sports Group's ongoing Chapter 11 bankruptcy proceedings, which have stretched over the past 16 months.
A Win for Fans
Xfinity customers who subscribe to the "Ultimate TV" package will now have access to live, local sports broadcasts once again. This deal will be particularly beneficial in major Comcast markets such as Atlanta, Minnesota, Detroit, Kansas City, Tampa Bay, and Miami. For avid supporters of local teams like the Braves and Twins, the opportunity to watch games through traditional broadcast channels is a welcome relief.
Fans of the Marlins, Rays, Royals, and Tigers also have an alternative viewing option thanks to the Bally Sports streaming app, which offers in-market viewing. This development ensures that the sports-watching experience remains accessible and varied.
A Strategic Agreement Amid Financial Uncertainty
The agreement with Comcast marks a significant milestone for Diamond Sports Group, especially as they navigate their tumultuous financial landscape. "Entering a new carriage agreement with Comcast, our third-largest distributor, is a critical step forward in our restructuring effort, and we are pleased that fans will again be able to access broadcasts of their local teams through Xfinity," said David Preschlack, CEO of Diamond Sports Group.
Diamond Sports Group faces pressing challenges, including finalizing agreements with the NHL and resolving ongoing negotiations with the NBA. "With certainty on our distribution, we are focused on finalizing an agreement with the NHL and resolving our ongoing negotiations with the NBA," Preschlack noted.
Looking Toward the Future
The timing of this resolution is crucial, with both basketball and hockey seasons fast approaching. Fans and stakeholders alike are watching closely as Diamond Sports Group aims to complete agreements with team and league partners. "We are mindful that time is of the essence with basketball and hockey seasons fast approaching, and once agreements with our team and league partners are complete, we intend to move expeditiously to present a plan of reorganization to the court," Preschlack added.
Currently, Diamond Sports Group holds the linear rights to 12 Major League Baseball teams. The new deal ensures that fans won't miss out on critical games and can continue to support their favorite teams throughout the season.

Xfinity customers have until August 30 to upgrade to the "Ultimate TV" package, granting them access to the newly restored Bally Sports channels. The package comes with a free three-month trial period, providing a temporary reprieve before customers need to commit to the additional $20 per month cost.
As Diamond Sports Group continues to navigate its Chapter 11 proceedings, the successful implementation of this agreement with Comcast serves as a beacon of hope. These efforts to stabilize and rebuild are not just about business; they represent a return to normalcy for fans whose passion and support are the lifeblood of local sports.
