Nakobe Dean Shows Promise in Eagles' Linebacker Role

Sunday marked a significant milestone for Philadelphia Eagles linebacker Nakobe Dean, who has made a remarkable comeback following a summer hampered by a foot injury. Dean’s latest performance underscored his potential and determination as he strives to secure a starting position for the upcoming NFL season.

Last year, Dean stepped into a starter's role. This season, however, he is earning his place through sheer grit and perseverance. Dean has gradually integrated into first-team reps, showcasing his talent on both ends of the field. Defensive coordinator Vic Fangio's faith in Dean's abilities has visibly paid off, as Dean continues to impress throughout training camp.

A Physical Presence on the Field

During Saturday’s practice, Dean's prowess was on full display. On the first play of 11-on-11 drills, he delivered a powerful tackle on running back Will Shipley immediately following a pass reception. Moments later, Dean broke up a pass intended for DeVonta Smith, further highlighting his defensive acumen.

The Eagles have been yearning for more physicality in their defense, and Dean’s efforts epitomize this newfound aggression. Dean credits new linebackers coach Bobby King for allowing him to fully embrace his physical playing style. Under King’s guidance, Dean has refined his technique and grown more comfortable being a physical force.

"I didn't have a day off, I didn't have an offseason. It was five days a week until training camp started as far as getting that foot right, getting better. It's like I'm not back, I'm better," Dean said, reflecting on his intense offseason training regimen.

Improvement and Versatility

Dean's relentless dedication has not gone unnoticed. Fangio’s defensive philosophy has provided the perfect backdrop for Dean to demonstrate his versatility as a linebacker. Known for his ability to cover, fill the A-gap, and blitz the quarterback, Dean has shown a well-rounded skill set that makes him indispensable to the Eagles' defensive lineup.

"The type of linebacker I am, I feel like you need to be able to do everything. You need to be able to cover, you need to be able to fill that A-gap, you need to be able to blitz the quarterback. And I feel like those are things I do good," Dean explained.

Continuous Improvement

Throughout training camp, Dean has emphasized block destruction, blitzing, and tackling—fundamental aspects that Fangio has highlighted. Although tackling has been somewhat minimized during camp, Dean seizes every opportunity to add a physical edge to his plays.

"I want to play. And I want to be the first one that plays. But I can't control that. The only thing I can control is what I come out here and do every day, work hard and continue to get better," Dean remarked, demonstrating his unwavering commitment to earning his spot.

Dean’s rigorous approach has been well-received by his teammates, including offensive starters who have yet to participate in preseason games. "Offensive guys have embraced it. They embraced the toughness. They want a feel. The offensive starters, they haven't played in the preseason (games). So the first time they get hit, they don't want it to be Week 1," Dean noted.

"We don't tackle as much in camp, so you try to thud as much as you can. In past years, I feel like I two-handed touch always. I want to thud," he added, emphasizing the importance of maintaining physical readiness.

With the start of the NFL season fast approaching, Nakobe Dean is inching ever closer to securing a starting linebacker position for Week 1. As his third year in the NFL unfolds, Dean is set on making a significant impact, embodying the physical and versatile linebacker that the Eagles' defense has long desired.

"I feel like I've had the kind of camp that I'm supposed to have," Dean summarized, his confidence and determination clearly evident in his journey so far. With his impressive offseason, dedication in training camp, and standout physical performance, Dean is poised to be a key asset for the Philadelphia Eagles in the battles to come.
