Tennessee Titans QB Will Levis Faces Criticism and Challenges in 2024 Season

The Tennessee Titans’ 2024 NFL season has started on a sour note, as they fell to 0-2 after a 24-17 defeat at the hands of the New York Jets in Week 2. A crucial mistake by quarterback Will Levis significantly contributed to the team's latest setback, highlighting ongoing issues in his play that he has yet to overcome.

Pivotal Error Costs Titans

In a critical moment during the game, Levis threw a pass to Tyjae Spears, which resulted in a fumble. This misstep allowed the Jets to capitalize and further solidify their lead. Offensive coordinator Callahan did not hold back in his assessment of the play during the postgame press conference, calling it "dumb."

Reflecting on the incident, Levis shared his perspective, revealing a mature outlook despite the criticism. "He told us straight off, he's not a yeller and screamer, but he can be and there's certain situations that allow for that, and that definitely was one of those situations," Levis said. "I didn't bat an eye at it. I took the coaching."

Recklessness Revisited

This is not the first time Levis’ risk-taking approach has come under scrutiny. With three interceptions and two fumbles in just the first two games, questions about his decision-making are becoming more prevalent. Analysts have pointed out that similar recklessness during his college career likely contributed to his fall in the 2023 NFL Draft, where he was selected 33rd overall.

Levis himself has admitted to his past faults. "I think a lot of people, when they hear gunslinger, they think about recklessness," he said. "I definitely feel like I was a little too reckless in my college career and tried to make some throws that I would want to take back. I changed that mentality a bit in my play last year."

His self-awareness is a promising sign for the Titans, who have lofty ambitions this season. "The goal for the 2024 Titans is to make a playoff run," Levis stated.

Learning and Moving Forward

Despite his challenging start, Levis remains committed to improving. He acknowledged the need for better decision-making and aligns with his coach's frustrations. "I was yelling at myself in my head the same way he was yelling at me," Levis revealed. "I know it's an emotional response that we all have after things like that. We were right back to it, and he had confidence in me on the next play taking that shot. That was cool to feel, coming back on the field after that turnover, even though we had another one after that. I don't have any problem with how he handled himself."

Upcoming Challenge

The Titans are set to host the Green Bay Packers this Sunday. They will face the Packers without their starting quarterback Jordan Love, who is sidelined due to injury. Malik Willis will step in as his replacement, potentially providing the Titans some breathing room as they seek their first win of the season.

Levis' ability to bounce back from adversity and his response to criticism will be crucial as the Titans attempt to get their season back on track. His admissions of past and present recklessness, coupled with his willingness to learn and grow, suggest a young player who understands the gravity of his role and the importance of refining his approach.

The coming weeks will be pivotal for both Levis and the Titans. They must translate their ambitions into performances on the field, cutting down on costly errors and making the most of their opportunities. If Levis can harness his talent while mitigating his risk-taking tendencies, the Titans may still have a chance to turn their season around and achieve their playoff aspirations.
