Anaheim Ducks Revolutionize Game Broadcasts with New Approach

The Anaheim Ducks are poised to revolutionize their local game broadcasts by adopting a cutting-edge approach that marries traditional and modern viewing methods. By transitioning to a combination of direct-to-consumer streaming and local broadcasts, the Ducks aim to significantly increase accessibility for fans across their TV market.

This strategic shift comes on the heels of the team’s contract expiration with their former broadcaster, Diamond Sports Group, which ended at the conclusion of the 2023-24 season. Diamond Sports Group, currently tangled in bankruptcy proceedings in Texas, had been a longstanding partner of the Ducks. The decision to move on provides the Ducks with an opportunity to reshape their broadcasting strategy and enhance fan engagement.

Expanding Access to Local Broadcasts

The highlight of the new broadcast arrangement is that 65 of the Ducks’ games next season will be aired on an over-the-air channel in Los Angeles—specifically, Channel 13. Fans within the regional territory, which includes Orange, Los Angeles, Riverside, San Bernardino, San Diego, Imperial, Santa Barbara, and Ventura counties, as well as Hawaii, will benefit from this added accessibility.

More exciting is the launch of the Victory+ streaming service, set to stream all games regionally at no cost to viewers. This free, ad-supported platform will be available on a variety of devices, including smart TVs, tablets, and smartphones, starting in September. "We are so pleased to announce that fans in our entire television market, via stream or traditional television (cable or over-the-air) will see locally broadcast games free of charge,” affirmed Ducks president Aaron Teats.

The move towards a more accessible broadcasting approach signifies a significant organizational priority. Teats added, “It is a significant organizational priority to connect Ducks fans with our entire market and for every fan in our region to have the opportunity to watch Ducks games without cost across multiple, accessible platforms.”

Collaboration with A Parent Media

This new broadcasting arrangement is made possible through the Ducks' partnership with A Parent Media. Jason Walsh, the chief operating officer for A Parent Media, expressed confidence in the Ducks' capabilities, stating, “The Ducks are already a significant content coordinator and have a team president with a broadcasting background.”

The transition is not merely about enhancing reach but also reflects an intent to boost fan engagement comprehensively. By marrying traditional broadcast means with modern streaming capabilities, the Ducks aim to bridge generational preferences and technological advancements, ensuring that die-hard fans and new viewers alike can access games effortlessly.

Continuity Amid Change

Despite these changes, the familiar voices of Brian Hayward and John Ahlers will continue to resonate with fans as they remain part of the Ducks' broadcast team. Their continued presence underscores the team’s commitment to delivering consistent and high-quality commentary, connecting fans with the on-ice action through voices they know and trust.

This innovative step by the Ducks mirrors similar moves within the NHL. The Florida Panthers, for instance, are moving their local broadcasts to Scripps Sports, while the Dallas Stars plan to stream their games regionally on Victory+. Meanwhile, Diamond Sports Group still holds broadcasting agreements for games with eight other NHL teams during the 2024-25 season, as well as partnerships with the Los Angeles Angels (MLB) and the LA Clippers (NBA).

Looking Forward

The Ducks' forward-thinking approach showcases the evolving landscape of sports broadcasting and their commitment to inclusivity and accessibility. By embracing both over-the-air channels and an ad-supported streaming service, the Ducks are placing themselves at the forefront of a shift that could well define the next era of sports viewership. This strategic move promises to keep loyal fans engaged while potentially attracting new supporters by making the game more accessible than ever before.
