Matt Riddle Eyes a Return to MMA in 2024
Former UFC fighter and current professional wrestling star Matt Riddle has hinted at a potential return to mixed martial arts (MMA) by 2024. At 37 years old, Riddle is considering stepping back into the ring or cage after a successful stint in the world of professional wrestling.
Riddle, who has been engaging in discussions with various combat sports organizations, remains tight-lipped about the specifics. However, the Wrestling Observer Newsletter has reported that there could be interest from both bare-knuckle fighting promotions and the Professional Fighters League (PFL).
The athlete's last appearance in an MMA fight dates back to February 2014 when he faced Michael Kuiper at Titan FC. Prior to that, Riddle had a notable tenure in the UFC, where he left on a high note with a four-win streak after a victory over Che Mills in 2013. Nevertheless, two of those wins were later overturned due to failed drug tests for marijuana, which led to criticism from UFC President Dana White.
Despite White's harsh words upon his departure, Riddle expresses gratitude towards the UFC head honcho. According to Riddle, White's public censure inadvertently raised his profile and helped him connect with fans who resonated with his experience, contributing to the development of his 'bro' persona in professional wrestling.
Riddle, currently a free agent, transitioned to professional wrestling in 2014 and made his in-ring debut the following year. He quickly rose through the ranks of various independent circuits, capturing several championships along the way. His skill and charisma eventually landed him a spot in WWE NXT in 2018, where he secured the NXT Tag Team Championship alongside Pete Dunne.
His momentum did not wane as he ascended to WWE's main roster, clinching the United States Championship in February 2021. Riddle also formed a popular tag team with veteran wrestler Randy Orton called "RK-Bro," with whom he captured the Raw Tag Team Championship on two occasions.
Despite his wrestling success, Riddle has maintained his combat skills, practicing martial arts multiple times a week. A Brazilian jiu-jitsu black belt, Riddle's dedication to staying fight-ready suggests a seamless transition back to MMA should he choose to do so.
Spotted at the Jake Paul vs. Andre August boxing match in Orlando, Riddle's presence at combat sports events fuels speculation about his return to active competition. While he acknowledges his positive run in pro wrestling, the allure of combat and the desire for a proper exit from MMA appear to weigh heavily on his decision-making.
In his own words, Riddle reflects on his journey and contemplates his future in combat sports. "I never say never," he stated, indicating that despite past grievances, he is open to opportunities that come his way without harboring resentment.
"I feel like I left the UFC on a four-fight win streak, then won another fight in Titan FC. I just kind of left and went to pro wrestling," Riddle recounted. "I did good (and am) still doing it. Pro wrestling is awesome, but I still want to get beat up. I want to have my exit. We'll see. Maybe somebody beats me up. Maybe I keep winning. Who knows?"
As Riddle ponders his next move, fans and pundits alike will be watching closely to see if this multifaceted athlete will make his way back to the sport where he first made his mark. Whether his return materializes and in what form remains to be seen, but one thing is certain: Matt Riddle's competitive spirit is as fierce as ever, and his potential comeback to MMA could shake up the scene once again.
